Established in 2009 and set within the picturesque Dart Valley, Lowertown Farm offers an ideal sanctuary for horses entering retirement, away from the hustle of main roads. Our mission is to deliver affordable, customised packages tailored to each horse's retirement needs. We prioritise providing a nurturing environment for horses of all ages, regardless of the circumstances leading to their retirement. Here, they enjoy the company of a compatible herd that matches their personalities and grazing preferences, allowing them to experience a fulfilling, natural existence. At Lowertown Farm, your horse will reside in a safe, serene setting. Our fields are abundant with natural shelter, gentle slopes, and lush hedgerows, complemented by fresh spring water troughs. Thanks to our Dartmoor location, we benefit from fewer flies in the summer and a pleasant breeze on warm days, creating a perfect retreat. The cost of livery is spread evenly throughout the year for all clients. Recognising that older horses can become stiff when stabled, we provide 24/7 turnout, which is a popular choice among all breeds. This arrangement allows your horse to determine their own activity level, particularly beneficial for those with joint stiffness, swelling, respiratory problems, or arthritis. During the summer, all horses live outside, while those requiring stabling in winter can enjoy our spacious facilities. Even the stabled horses benefit from an average of nine hours of turnout during daylight to alleviate stiffness. We implement a comprehensive field management programme to restore pastures after winter, control weeds, and promote healthy growth, alongside a thorough worming regimen, guided by Westgate Laboratory. Our haylage, produced on-site, ensures quality and is harvested under optimal conditions for winter feeding. We have excellent veterinary cover available around the clock and are happy to accommodate your own vet if preferred. Owners have unrestricted access to their horses, and we maintain regular communication through emails and updates, including photos on Facebook, keeping everyone involved in their horse's retirement journey.Hannah, who studied equestrianism at Duchy College in Cornwall, has been immersed in the world of horses since the age of two when she won a pony ride in a raffle. With 30 years of experience handling various types of horses, including ex-racers, working hunters, polo ponies, and feral Dartmoor ponies, she also volunteers with the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust.
